The Leader's Guide to Claude

Get real value out of Claude, without the guesswork

So here's the truth. Most of us are getting the same average output everybody else gets, because nobody showed us how to actually set this thing up. This is that walkthrough. Plain language, one step at a time, built for leaders.

1The reframe

What Claude actually is for a leader

Before the buttons and the settings, get this one idea straight. It changes everything you do next.

Most of us treat Claude like a smarter search box. You type a question, you get an answer, you move on. And then you wonder why the answer feels generic, like it could have been written for anyone.

Here's the thing. If you ask a question with zero context, Claude goes and looks at the whole internet, finds the most average version of an answer, and hands it back. So unless you give it context, you don't get context back.

The way I think about it: a good skill is the difference between grabbing a random expert at a conference and walking into your own strategist's office, the one who already knows your company, your people, and how you make decisions.

Think of it like fire or electricity. World-changing, sure. But just having it in the building doesn't make your work better. You have to use it on purpose. The leaders getting real value out of Claude aren't the ones with the fanciest prompts. They're the ones who treat it like a capable new hire: they tell it who they are, hand it the real material, and put it to work on things that actually matter.

That's the whole game. Give it context, give it real work, keep your own judgment in the driver's seat. The next five chapters are just the practical version of that.

2The setup

Set it up right, once

Three quick things. Do them one time and everything else in this guide just works.

Use a paid plan

Skills and file work need Claude Pro or higher. The free tier can't run them. If you're on free, upgrade first, it's the cost of a couple of coffees.

Get the desktop app (optional)

On Mac or Windows, the Claude app gives you Cowork, a workspace where Claude can build things for you. Everything here also works in a browser at claude.ai.

Flip one switch

In Settings → Capabilities, turn on Code execution and file creation. This is what lets skills run and lets Claude build them. One toggle, one time.

That last one is the switch people miss. If a skill ever refuses to build or run, this is almost always why. You'll see it again in Chapter 5.

3The habits that matter

The five moves

You don't need a hundred prompt tricks. You need these five habits. They're what turn Claude from a party trick into something you actually rely on, and most of us skip right past them.

1

Give it a role and your real material

Don't ask in a vacuum. Tell Claude who it's being for this task, then paste the actual document, email, or numbers you're working with. Vague in, average out. Real context in, useful work back.

Try: "You're my chief of staff. Here's the board deck. Tell me the three questions a skeptical director will ask."
2

Make it disagree with you

Claude wants to be agreeable, and agreeable is dangerous when you're making a decision. Tell it to push back. Ask for the case against your plan before you fall in love with it.

This is exactly what May's Gold Skill does: the Anti-Sycophancy Skill, which stops Claude from flattering you and makes it tell you the truth.
3

Get the red pen before you ship

Before anything goes out under your name, hand it back to Claude and ask it to find what's weak, unclear, or unsupported. It's a lot cheaper to hear it from Claude than from your audience.

June's Gold Skill is built for this: the Red Pen Review, a brutally honest edit that catches what's soft before you publish.
4

Work it like a conversation, not a slot machine

The first answer is a draft, not a verdict. Tell it what's off, give it a little more context, ask it to try again. Two or three rounds of that beats hunting for the one magic prompt every time.

Try: "Good start. Cut it in half, make it sound like me, and drop the corporate words."
5

Give it memory so you stop repeating yourself

If you find yourself explaining your business, your voice, or your process for the tenth time, stop. Save that context once as a skill, and Claude remembers it every time after. That's the whole reason skills exist, and it's what the rest of this guide sets you up to do.

July's Gold Skill shows the payoff: the Meeting Prep Skill, which walks in ready and walks out with the follow-up already written.
4The main event

Install this month's Gold Skill

Every month, paid subscribers get a ready-made skill: a full prompt you paste in once and keep forever. Here's the whole install, click by click. Pick where you use Claude and follow along.

The walkthrough

Six steps, top to bottom. Just keep scrolling. Each one animates as you reach it.

That's it. Your skill is live.

You just did the thing most people are still only reading about. From here, every new Gold Skill takes about a minute.

5Troubleshooting

When it's not working

Almost every problem is one of these five, and every one takes under a minute to fix.

01The skill won't build or won't run+
Nine times out of ten, this is the one switch from Chapter 2. Go to Settings → Capabilities and turn on Code execution and file creation. Without it, Claude can't build or run a skill. Flip it on and try again.
02I pasted the prompt and Claude just chatted back+
You probably dropped the first line. The Gold Skill prompt starts with a line like "Create a skill with the information below." That first line is the instruction to Claude. If you skip it, the paste turns into a normal message instead of building a skill. Copy the whole block, top to bottom, and send it again.
03I don't see a "Save skill" button+
Give it a moment. Claude builds the skill first, then shows a skill card with the Save skill button on it. If it asked you questions, answer them and it'll finish. If you closed the card, just say "save that as a skill" and it'll bring it back.
04The skill installed but it's not doing anything+
Skills fire automatically when your request fits them, but you can also call one on purpose. Type "/" in the message box and pick it from the list, or just name what you want ("give this the red-pen review"). If it still sits quiet, open a fresh chat and try again.
05I can't find where skills live+
In the sidebar, open Customize, then the Skills tab. Every skill you've saved is there with an on/off switch. On the desktop app it's in the same place. If a skill looks off, toggle it on.
Leadership in Change

You're set. Now keep going.

A new Gold Skill drops every month for paid subscribers, plus the frameworks and real-world playbooks behind them. If this guide was useful, that's the room you want to be in.
