Coaching vs Fractional
Honestly, most people know when they need a fractional CAIO. If you're not sure, that's usually a signal to start with coaching. Book one hour, bring your team, and work through your biggest AI hurdle together. Most organizations do two to three coaching sessions before they decide on a retainer, and that's the right order of operations.
Two to three sessions is the most common pattern. The first session usually surfaces the real challenge. The second or third makes clear whether what you need is ongoing strategic leadership (fractional CAIO) or a specific build. Neither path is wrong. It's about what your organization is actually ready to absorb.
Yes, and that's often the best way to start. One focused hour with your leadership team around a real AI challenge is usually worth more than months of independent research. Book a single session, bring the people who are closest to the problem, and you'll leave with enough clarity to decide what the next step should be.

Pricing
Sessions are $300 for businesses, $200 for nonprofits. Each session runs 60 minutes. There's no retainer, no minimum commitment, and no package you have to buy before you can talk to anyone. You can book one session and stop there. Most clients don't, but the option is always there.
The Advisor tier starts at $1,750/month and is built for small businesses with 10 to 100 employees. It includes up to two hours of live strategy sessions per month plus async support. The Operator tier is $3,500/month, designed for small to mid-sized businesses with 50 to 500 employees, and adds a quarterly executive workshop and a board-ready AI update deck. Both start with a six-month initial term.
Yes. Coaching sessions are $200 for nonprofits (versus $300 for businesses). For fractional CAIO retainers, standard pricing applies. The coaching path is the accessible entry point for nonprofit budgets.
Custom Builds
Custom marketing-focused AI tools for small businesses and nonprofits. The most common builds are second brain systems for CEOs, content repurposing tools, competitor research tools, and SEO analysis tools. Builds typically run $2,000 to $5,000, are scoped around what you actually need, and you own everything that ships. There are no off-the-shelf packages.
Yes. Builds are scoped and priced separately. That said, most build engagements start with at least one coaching session to make sure we're building the right thing for the right workflow. Skipping that step tends to produce tools that don't get used, and neither of us wants that outcome.
Most builds run $2,000 to $5,000. The final scope depends on what you need, and everything gets defined before any work starts. You're never handed a surprise invoice. You own everything that gets built, with no ongoing subscription or vendor dependency once the project is done.

Yes. All services are available in English and Spanish. Discovery calls, coaching sessions, fractional CAIO engagements, and build projects can all run in either language. If Spanish is easier for your team, just say so when you book.
The AI Leadership Triad is a framework Joel developed identifying the three skills every leader needs to work effectively in the AI era: Adaptability (adjusting strategy as AI capabilities evolve), Innovation (reimagining workflows and products using AI), and Creativity (the human capacity to connect ideas in ways AI cannot). The free AI Leadership Compass assessment at compass.jsalinas.org helps leaders evaluate where they stand on each dimension.
Logistics
It's 30 minutes. No pitch, no slide deck. You tell me where you are, what's actually slowing you down, and what you're hoping AI can do for your organization. I'll tell you honestly whether coaching, a fractional engagement, or a specific build is the right next step, and what that would look like. If neither is a fit, I'll tell you that too.
Yes. All services are fully remote via Google Meet. The client base is US-focused, but geographic location doesn't matter. The main thing is that you're working in English or Spanish, and that your organization is in the small-to-mid-sized range where this kind of engagement actually makes sense.
Still have questions?
The fastest way to get an answer is a free 30-minute discovery call. No pitch, no slide deck. You tell me where you are and what you're trying to figure out, and I'll give you an honest answer on what makes sense for your organization.
